Bathroom Remodeling Basics: a Guide to Toilet Installation
Posted by adminOct 6
For most people, they consider the whole process of toilet installation as something that should only be left for professionals to do. However, this is not necessarily true as toilets are usually designed in a way so that they can easily be removed and replaced easily. If you are planning to replace your toilet for a new one that is more stylish or more water-friendly or if you just want to remove it to get rid of stubborn blockage, then here are the steps on
how to install a new toilet when doing a do-it-yourself bathroom remodeling project.
1. First off, prepare the following materials that you would need: an adjustable wrench or a set of wrenches, a screwdriver, a bucket and sponge, a wax ring and toilet flange bolts with a 5/16 diameter.
2. To begin the removal process of the toilet installation, shut off the water supply of the toilet first. You can do this by using the valve on a small pipe that runs to the lower left side of the tank of the toilet.
3. You can then flush the toilet so that most of the water in the tank would be gone. Bail the remaining water and if there is just a small amount of left, you can use a sponge to completely remove the water in the tank.
4. Remove the water supply tube which goes to the tank of the toilet. After this, remove the bolts that are in the bottom portion of the flange which connect it to the toilet. Once you have removed the bolts, you can then lift the tank and disconnect it from the toilet.
5. Remove the decorative trim caps which are on the toilet’s base. Undo the toilet bolts or the flange bolts which hold the toilet on the flange. These bolts could have already corroded so you might need to cut them using a rotary cutting tool or a hacksaw.
6. You can then stand over your toilet and then rock it gently so that the seal at the base would be broken. Afterwards, you can lift up the toilet and completely remove it.
7. Before installing the new toilet, you would need to clean the wax residue first that can be found on the toilet flange which is around the hole. If you would be reinstalling the same toilet, you would also need to clean any residue on the base of the toilet itself.
8. To install the new toilet, put two new toilet closet or flange bolts in the holes which are on the flange’s opposite sides. The bolts should be pointing straight up. You could then place the new wax ring on the flange.
9. You could then lower the toilet on to the wax ring, while ensuring that both of the bolts come through the holes which are on the base of the toilet. Push the toilet straight down while squeezing the wax ring, creating a watertight seal.
10. Get rid of any rocking through putting some rubber shims under the base of the toilet.
11. Place some nuts and washers on the protruding toilet flange bolts. Tighten them up until they are already snug. However, be careful to not make them too tight or the toilet bowl could crack.
12. Attach the tank of the toilet. You would need two bolts that have rubber washers to place in the tank and a rubber gasket to place between the toilet and the tank.
13. Connect the line of the water supply to the base of the tank and then turn on the water. Make sure to check for any leaks.
14. Put back the decorative trim caps on the flange bolts. You might have to cut them so that they can over the bolts.
15. To complete the toilet installation, install the seat and the cover of the tank.
Through following these simple steps and with a little elbow grease, you should be able to do the toilet installation without having to hire a professional anymore.
