Back in the olden days, whenever there was a huge storm, the people inside the house would have to sit through it and hope that their home would be able to withstand against the outside elements. Those who were lucky enough to have windows would have to repeatedly pay for the cost of repairing any damages left after the ensuring heavy winds. Others who were not so lucky learnt to bear with the weather conditions. However, all this changed in 1950 with the creation of storm windows. While not much is noted about who actually produced the first storm window, reports suggest that storm windows were in fact first manufactured at about this point in time.

The years after that followed and there were many more manufacturing companies creating hurricane windows which opened up business in producing and selling storm windows to the general public. Back then, most storm windows were made of simple materials such as wood and vinyl. If you wanted to install it in the house, the storm windows were kept in place by metal pins which made moving them around a tad difficult. However, they did the job of keeping the weather out. Thus, you would begin to find more and more households who would install these windows in their homes.

Throughout the years, the sale of storm windows continued to grow, especially in countries which were more prone to harsh weather conditions. It was not until the 1970s when the storm window industry began to grow. As more and more research was poured in, different designs and alterations to the original storm window began to emerge. Different types of materials were used to make up the pane and screen of the storm window whereby it was no longer necessary to use metal pins to keep the windows in place. By that time, you could easily slide the storm windows out of their frames as and when the occasion required.

And so it is that up till date, the storm window industry is still thriving. The additional benefits of automatic insulation and low cost of installing hurricane windows ensure that this industry will continue to grow from strength to strength.
